Brief Biography
Rostislav S. Karpov was born in Tomsk. In 1960, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of General Medicine of the Tomsk Medical Institute. Under supervision of Professor Dmitry D. Yablokov who was a Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Rostislav S. Karpov worked his way from a resident physician to a head of the department (1979). He was an originator and the first dean of the Continuous Medical Education Faculty in the Tomsk Medical Institute. In 1966, he defended doctoral thesis titled “Comparative diagnostic value of some immunological and biochemical tests in identifying the rheumatic process activity in patients with valvular heart diseases” for an academic degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences. In 1974, he defended doctoral thesis titled “Clinical and immunological characteristics of recurrent rheumatism in adults” for an academic degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences. In 1980, Rostislav S. Karpov was assigned a Deputy Director for Research for the Siberian Branch of the All-Union Cardiology Research Center of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. From that time through all the following years, he has held a position of a Head of the Department of Atherosclerosis and Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease. In 1978, he was awarded an academic title of a Full Professor at the Internal Medicine Department. In 1980, he was elected as a Corresponding Member and, in 1982, as a Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (later on the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences). From 1986 to June 30, 2015, he was a Director of Cardiology Research Institute and a Chairman of the Presidium of the Tomsk Science Center. From July, 2016, Rostislav S. Karpov has been a Scientific Supervisor of Cardiology Research Institute and the entire Tomsk NRMC.
Research Interests
Rostislav S. Karpov is an author of over 900 scientific works including 415 national and international articles, 28 monographs, and 10 chapters in monographs including two chapters in “Guidelines for Internal Diseases” addressing fundamental issues of clinical medicine. He holds 43 patents and certificates of inventions. Under supervision of Rostislav S. Karpov, 42 dissertations for a degree of Doctor of Sciences and 81 dissertations for a degree of Candidate of Sciences (equivalent of Ph.D.) have been defended.
Primary research interests of Rostislav S. Karpov comprise the development of the methods for prevention, early diagnostics, and treatment of ischemic heart disease and arterial hypertension. Great attention is given to the problem of comorbidities (combination of ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, and rheumatic arthritis) and the development and clinical implementation of cutting-edge ultrasound technologies in cardiology. Improvement of organizational forms of medical care in Siberia has been of high priority. Indeed, he initiated the first-beyond-Ural Cardiology Center, mobile system of delivering medical care for cardiac patients from sparsely populated areas based on motorship “Cardiologist”, Branch of Cardiology Research Institute in Tyumen (Tyumen Cardiology Center), Center of Children's Heart, Siberian Federal Arrhythmology Center, and information-and-education project titled “Healthy Heart”.
Achievements, awards, and grants
Rostislav S. Karpov honorably represents national science participating with presentations at the most significant national and international scientific congresses and symposia. He supervises an organization and conductance of the republican and regional conferences and meetings concerning current problems of cardiology.
He is a principal investigator of the project titled “The role of autonomic nervous system of the heart in pathogenesis and progression of ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias” supported by grant from the Russian Science Foundation (2015–2017).
Rostislav S. Karpov is a Member of the European and International Societies of Cardiology, Member of the Medical Division Office of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honorary Member of the Bulgarian Society of Cardiology, and Chairman of the Cardiology Task Group of the Interdepartmental Academic Council N 53 of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Rostislav S. Karpov is a Chairman of the Siberian Medical Foundation n.a. Dmitry D. Yablokov, a Member of the Board of the Russian Society of Cardiology, a Chairman of the Tomsk Region Science-and-Practice Society of Cardiologists and Gerontologists, a Member of the Coordination Council under the Head of Tomsk Region Administration, a Member of a Working Group on the Development of Measures for Improvement of the System of Medical and Social Care for Cardiovascular Diseases in a framework of the Expert Committee on Healthcare, a Chairman of Specialized Council for Defense of Doctoral Theses for Academic Degrees of Candidate and Doctor of Sciences, and a Member of the Council of University Rectors in Tomsk Region. During many years, Rostislav S. Karpov has been a Chief Cardiologist of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation in the Siberian Federal District.
Long-standing productive research, scientific, managerial, and academic activities of Rostislav S. Karpov are highly esteemed and recognized. He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1981), the USSR State Prize in the field of science and technology (1982), the Golden Medal of the Economic Achievements Exhibition (1985), the Order of the October Revolution (1987), the Lapel Badge for Excellence in Healthcare (1990), the Order of Honor (1996), the title of Honorary Citizen of the city of Tomsk (1997), the Medal for Services to National Healthcare (2001), the Lapel Badge for Services to the Tomsk Region (2004), the Nikolay Pirogov’s Order for the Outstanding Achievements in Medicine (2005), the Prize n.a. N. S. Korotkov (2005), the Commemorative Medal to “the Best People of Russia” (the highest public award in the Russian Federation) for Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Science Potential of Russia (2005), the Degree IV Order of Merit for the Fatherland (2007), the State Prize of the Russian Federation in Science and Technology (2009), the Medal for Contribution to Progress of Cardiology in Siberia (2010), the Certificate of Merit from the Tomsk Region Administration (2012), and the Certificate of Merit from Mayor of the City of Tomsk (2015). Professor Karpov is a Laureate of the Demidov Prize (2015) and Honorary Citizen of the Tomsk Region (June 30, 2016). In 2017, he was awarded the Gold Medal in the name of S.P. Botkin and the Certificates of Merit from the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Siberian State Medical University, and the Regional Committee Presidium of the Trade Union of Russian Healthcare Workers. In 2017, he received the Honorary Diploma and the Commemorative Medal from the Russian Society of Cardiology.
